The completion of The Peninsula Shanghai in 2010 marked the end point of a long journey which started and ended in almost exactly the same place for the Kadoorie clan of hoteliers. They began launching and managing top properties back in Shanghai in the 1920s, transitioned the empire to Hong Kong where they ran the famed The Peninsula Hong Kong, and were allowed to undertake the first new construction on the Bund in a half century to bring this masterful hotel to life. The Lobby doubles as the all-day dining restaurant as well as the site for regular themed high teas. It's daubed in mellow greens and muted silvers, and is the place respectable people go to be with their own kind and the service is second to none—though the real genius of this hotel is the beautiful rooms. An obsidian panther stretches on the marble mantle of a faux fireplace and armchairs upholstered in purple sit in front of floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Entry-level rooms feel like suites, suites feel like palaces and everyone who stays there feels like royalty.
