Information

Established in 2005 under the direction of renowned art historian and critic Huang Zhuan, this is China’s first non-profit contemporary art organization affiliated with a national art museum. Two Art Deco former warehouses of the China Industrial Bank make up an overall space of 1,600 square meters. OCAT considers itself a "communication network" and an "international terminal" for contemporary Chinese art. OCAT is mostly dedicated to visual art, but live art, music performances, film and multimedia works have also been presented.

OCAT is a division of the He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, and takes its name from the Overseas Chinese Town where it is located, in the Suzhou creek area. In 2012, OCAT Shanghai officially started using the space for both the display and research of multimedia art. In this vein, OCAT's mission is to enable and enhance the public's understanding of multimedia art and to facilitate exchange between China and the world.
